The story of journalist David Aaronovitch is an interesting case study. The Guardian journalist weighed 18 stone at the age of 46 with spiralling blood pressure. He was a prime heart attack risk. For Aaronovitch, like many of us, his weight gradually built over the years, creeping up on him.

Aaronovitch opted for a healthy eating plan and joined a 'fat club' to help him take the steps he needed. Like him, many people embrace overeating as a form of self destructive behaviour. But as well as the extreme side of comfort eating, all of us are increasingly overweight simply thanks to our modern lifestyles. A healthy eating plan is crucial not just for those desperate to lose large amounts of weight - a healthy eating plan should be what we adhere to as part of our lifestyles. And as such, a healthy eating plan isn't about a quick fix diet, or a temporary change in how we eat, a healthy eating plan is about changing our attitudes to what we eat permanently. With the right guidance, Aaronovitch ditched the chocolates and McMuffins. It wasn't vanity that pushed him into a healthy eating plan, but the fact his doctor told him his blood pressure (144 over 96) put him at a substantial risk of a heart attack, or stroke, within a few years. After just five weeks into his healthy eating plan, Aaronovitch reported weight loss and an ability to run further. He concluded in a diary on his healthy eating plan: "The loss of weight and the capacity for exercise have given me a buzz. I'm feeling much better. I'm less sleepy, less sweaty, less stuffed...As we get older, we simply can't afford all these beta blockers and diuretics, unnecessary angioplasties and stroke rehabilitations, when all we have to do, for Christ's sake, is to get people to eat properly and exercise more."
