A pedometer can be good for the body, mind and the soul.
There is no problem you can't walk your way out of. Walking is exercise for the mind and the body. It's a chance to walk through your worries, thoughts, fears, anxieties and dreams. Investing in a pedometer could be a way to improve your fitness in body and mind. And those who already know the joys of a pedometer, who are no strangers to the open road, already know the joys of walking.
Walking Your Way to Fitness
Many people invest in a pedometer to fulfil their fitness and weight loss goals. A pedometer is a way of actively measuring how far you are improving, and the progress you need to make. But there are side effects to buying a pedometer - and not unwanted or unpleasant side effects. In fact, if you have invested in a pedometer to boost your weight loss regime, you'll find it isn't just your body that gets a work out. Walking has long been linked to spirituality. In fact, the Aborigines in Australia have a creation myth where the world was sung into existence by their ancestors as they walked across the vast lands, hence the phrase 'going walkabout'. Writing in his book the Songlines, travel writer Bruce Chatwin concluded that walking is in fact a fundamental human impulse. That we, as a species, need to be restless, to wander.
Pedometer - Take the Right Steps
A pedometer is an investment and commitment to taking more steps in life. And as many writers, poets and travellers have realised, walking through nature can be a journey through the soul. Writing in the Telegraph newspaper, author and feminist Germaine Greer explains how walking is a way to get to a world beyond thought. By incorporating a pedometer into your everyday life, you can commit to power walks, and build up your walking fitness. And if you love walking, finding a favourite beauty spot in nature is one way to ensure you get the most out of the experience. For Greer, walking is the only way to experience the countryside (not jogging). For those with a pedometer, taking a brisk stride is crucial. But for Greer, walking is not just about exercise. It's about taking in nature. She writes: "As you walk the countryside unfolds around you, not spinning past but opening up, gradually revealing itself as you find yourself within it by adjusting scale and perspective until you know your place, upon the grass and under the trees, tiny under the vast sky, eye to eye with the robin."
There are many reasons why people invest in a pedometer - primarily for weight loss - but some may be surprised to discover the world of walking offers much more than burning calories. As Greer writes, walking is a way of washing out toxins, building strength and freeing the mind, "the brain loosens its clutch and the soul takes wing." Walking offers escape from the problems and clutches of day to day demands.
