Weight Loss Programme - Women Need to Step Up
Posted 10 February 2009

More women should take up a weight loss programme that involves more physical activity as well as a healthy diet.

Older women may have to consider a weight loss programme and increased physical exercise - more so than older men - according to two separate studies. BBC online reported that research is being presented at the UK Society for Behavioural Medicine annual conference that shows women over 70 and girls at school age are not as active as their male counterparts.

Weight Loss Programme - Get Active

Weight loss programmes are not just about healthy diets - it's crucial to incorporate activity and exercise into your day-to-day routine too. The study by Liverpool's John Moores University revealed that girls of school age do 6% less vigorous activity than boys. It's thought this is partly due to the fact boys tend to play in larger play groups that are more likely to do team sports such as football, whereas girls tend towards smaller groups and verbal games.
Dr Nicky Ridgers, the researcher behind the study, said this was a concern as it was contributing to girls being overweight. More weight loss programmes are being implemented for children and teenagers who are obese. Weight loss programmes should never involve extreme dieting or extreme exercise - an effective weight loss programme incorporates realistic healthy eating and realistic activities that help create an overall healthier lifestyle.

Older Women Exercise Less than Male Counterparts

Weight loss programmes that step up exercise levels and advocate low fat diets might be increasingly necessary for many older women too. The University of Bristol in a separate study examining the exercise levels of the over-70s found females undertook lower intensity activities than men. Activity levels are important to help maintain a healthy weight. The two studies have prompted calls from experts and academics to find ways to promote greater physical activity for young girls and older women. A weight loss programme may be necessary for those whose lack of physical activity and poor diet is putting them at increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. It's always important to seek medical advice before undertaking a weight loss programme. But generally activity and exercise helps strengthen bones and joints - which is why it's important for children of school age to take part in games and sports. For older females in their seventies, activities such as dancing and walking helps women stay mobile and flexible. By incorporating activity and a healthy diet, more women will succeed in their weight loss programme.
