Weight Loss - Warnings Around 'Quack' Foods
Posted 10 February 2009

If you're looking for effective and permanent weight loss, nutritional experts say avoid fad foods or diet supplements.

It seems there's always a new diet book out, but rather than focusing on foods labelled as low fat, or extreme diets that can sacrifice on vital nutrients, investing in a healthy eating cook book could be more effective. Eating healthily in an attempt at weight loss is often associated with dull or bland food. But examine any successful weight loss diet and the trick is fresh, healthy ingredients and creative, exciting cooking. Weight loss often fails because people become bored with their diet - and yet by adapting a healthy diet and embracing tasty foods and recipes you can achieve long - term weight loss, nutritional balance and optimum health.

Weight Loss - Ready, Steady, Cook

And nutritionists have come forward in the media stating foods that claim to aid weight loss are a false promise. Professor Michael Lean of the University of Glasgow has spoken out in the British Medical Journal about the labelling of some foods and products as low fat, or claims that they help weight loss or lower cholesterol. Professor Lean said such products were a 'waste of money'. The backbone to any weight loss strategy is actually straightforward - healthy, fresh foods with plenty of vegetables and fruit, moderation when it comes to alcohol or 'treats' and an increase in exercise. What people struggle with is motivation - getting the right help, and finding interesting recipes that are affordable, easy and accessible can help.

Affordable Weight Loss - Avoid Fad Foods

In fact, we may be getting poorer financially as the recession kicks in, but we can become richer with our health - and weight loss is affordable. It's cheaper to buy basic vegetables and fresh foods than it is to buy most of what Professor Lean has dubbed as 'quack' foods. Prof Lean writing in the British Medical Journal said - Unscrupulous trading is most commonly linked to obesity. In 2000, $35bn was spent in the United States on weight loss products. Many of these products use false and unsubstantiated claims...

Healthy Diet for Weight Loss - Reducing the Risks of Cancer

Another reason to stick to a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables is the news that vitamin supplements don't reduce your risk of developing cancer - only a diet full of fruit and vegetables can do this. Supplements or processed foods that are advertised as good for you to help weight loss or to be healthier shouldn't be used in place of basic fruit and veg. Researchers found in a trial of 7,500 women, that vitamins and antioxidant supplements did not protect women against cancer over a period of ten years. The evidence joins a mountain of studies that point to the importance of a balanced diet with fresh fruit and vegetables. So for weight loss as well as a healthy lifestyle, it can be cheaper, as well as more effective to stick to simple recipes rich in fruit and vegetables. In light of the findings, Cancer Research UK issued a statement to the press: The best way to get your full range of vitamins and minerals is to eat a healthy, balanced diet, with a variety of fruit and vegetables. Supplements do not substitute for a healthy diet, although some people may be advised to take them at certain times in their lives.
