December Member of the Month - Anne Wiles
Posted 08 December 2008

This month's star member of the month is Ann Wiles - Ann started with Fitbug after joining Back to Basics - a weight management programme run by Bradford and Airedale Primary Care Trust. Back to Basics encompasses the use of Fitbug alongside weekly group meetings and healthy eating advice. Having done so fantastically well, we thought we'd let Anne tell us about her Fitbug experience in her own words...

I have been putting weight on steadily for years. I have tried Weight Watchers a few times but have always put the weight back on plus more! I was worrying about my weight and it's effect on my health in the future. I thought I couldn't exercise as my hips were painful and I became breathless. I gave up trying...until I went to my first Back to Basics meeting and was inspired, realising I could give it a go!

The Fitbug gave me a very good reason to try exercising, steadily at first and when I couldn't fit in a walk I used my husband's exercise bike. This has really helped me to strengthen my legs without putting pressure on my hips. I now aim to cycle 20 minutes every morning and evening during these dark nights and I can feel the difference.

The weekly meetings are something to look forward to. We have a very supportive group and our leader is so helpful and full of tips and advice when we need it. And we all laugh a lot!

The website is wonderful! I input my food daily and now feel I am in control of my weight. I can change my menus to to fit into a healthy eating plan checking the target wheel and counting my calories. The results have proved how well this plan works, I have now lost three stones(18.8kg) in 19 weeks, about two lbs(0.99kg) a week on average.

I have still got a long way to go to reach my target, but I know I can do it because I am in charge of my weight loss. There isn't someone telling me to do it. I am doing it for myself. I never believed in the saying "walking my lunch off" but now I see it works!

If I had to give my top tips for others they would be 1) to input everything before it's eaten onto the website because this helps to control your calorie intake and amend portions! 2) to drink hot water rather than tea or coffee especially on cold days, and lastly...to plan to exercise in two sessions a day, then if something else crops up, you have at least one session!

I hope my story will give encouragement to other "bigger girls" like me who may think it's too late for them to make any changes. It's not, with help from Back to Basics and my Fitbug I have a new healthy way of life ahead.
